****Help please ****xp/sp2
I have a floppy disk that the a: drive won't read. It was okay until today.
if I try to open it in explorer, it gives an egg-timer for 20secs, then says
"the disk in drive A is not formatted, do you want to format it now?". No
problems with other disks. Tried safe mode with Admin but similar
result.Reading disk from CMD gives me "
The volume does not contain a recognized file system.
Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that
the v
olume is not corrupted".Previous to this problem i was having difficulty
writing to the same disk along the lines of "you don't have the rights to
write to this .."How can it suddenly go all awry?

if, as you say, other disks work fine in that machine, then chances are the
FD that is giving you issues is dead.

Could you enlighten me how a floppy can die?

I bet it would work if i formatted it, as it asks me to.

Possibly, though likely not for long. By your own description, that floppy
has been giving trouble for a bit, started with the problems with writing to
the disk. The floppy disk is a very impermanent form of storage and highly
susceptible to failure over time.

Follow these steps:
1. Look under seat cushions for spare change.
2. Take change to computer store and trade for floppy drive.
3. Wrap fingers around screwdriver.
4. Replace floppy drive.

Floppy drives are commodity items, made from old beer-can metal, by child
laborers. They are junk.

Don't believe me? Name another item with ten or so moving parts that retails
for less than $7.00.

You're lucky if it lasts a month.
