98 to xp upgrade

I am trying to upgrade from 98 to xp, but after it goes
through "preparing to install" it reboots and I get the
message "<windows root>\system32\.hal.dll is corrupt or
missing, reload this file to continue" I went to the
knowledge base and they say to simply hit F8 on reboot and
select "cancel Windows XP install" which is nice, but
complete crap there is no such option. The only OS choice
is the corrupted version. I do not have my original Win98
disks, nor did it say anywhere in the installation
instructions for XP to make a boot disk prior to
installing. so what do I do ???

Borrow a valid Win98 CD to install WinXP. From what I understand
all you need is the Win98 CD to install WinXP upgrade. If you
backed up all your important data you may need to reformat the
HD install Win98 and then install WinXP. If you didn't backup
your data then get a tool to retrieve the data from your HD
first.
