Hi,

I have 2 hard disks, 1 installed with Win XP, 2nd
installed with win98. Both are connected to the 1st IDE
controller.
and i have arc path in boot.ini file as follows,

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)="Microsoft windows
xp" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)="Microsoft windows 98"

I can boot to winxp, But when i boot to win98, Error msg
like
<System Root>\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupted
<System Root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupted

Could anyone tell me how I can dual boot winxp and win98

Sincerely,

Joe

CS you are mistaken about Win98 not booting if it's not on the C drive. You
can put 98 on any drive but 98 will install some files on the C drive
pointing to the drive letter it is installed on. If the C drive in not
formatted FAT or FAT32 you can't do this.

Doesn't matter if CS is mistaken or not, do as he says, get a copy of
bootitng regardless of how many drives. It's one of the best bargains out
there, worth having for the image backup alone but does much more and you
won't have to worry about winxp being ntfs..

Joe,
I have a two hd dual boot setup like that. Sortof. I was lazy, I just
change the drive sequence in my BIOS when I want to switch.

Hi Joe:

You need to understand that Win9X/ME (any version) will not boot
unless it's booting from the FIRST hard drive (HDD0) and on the first
active primary DOS partition. Your copy of Win98 is located on the
second hard drive (HDD1) therefore it will not boot. Doesn't matter
what you have in boot.ini. Now having said that - there are third
party boot managers that will allow you to overcome that.

I suggest you take a look at BootIt Next Generation which is shareware
- try for 30 days free. It's also a partition manager, can make
images and much more. A real bargain. Go to
www.terabyteunlimited.com and take a look. You can download a fully
functional copy which fits on a floppy disk!

If you were booting both XP and 98 from the same HDD (HDD0) you would
not need a boot manager.

Wrong.

In my book, that's still booting from C:. Now, Microsoft may not agree
because they perversely choose to reverse the definitions of the boot drive
and system drive. To hear Microsoft tell it, you start booting from your
"system" drive and load your operating system from the "boot" drive.
