98 NetMeeting v XP Messenger

O

Olaf von Rein

Hi, when still running 98, I would use Messenger to
initiate video calls which were delegated for
NetMeeting. Since upgrading to XP, this hand-off no
longer happens and XP Messenger handles the video
conferencing inside the general dialogue window. That's
nice, prima facie. However, under NetMeeting I used to
be able to control the picture size of my video (make it
larger) whereas under XP, I can find no such option.
Moreover, when my toddlers talk to their grandparents,
they always loved to see themselves in a separate, large
video window (that NetMeeting used to provide). Under XP
Messenger, I can only elect to have a tiny picture-in-
picture displayed.

Did I miss some obvious config options? Or is there any
other way to get the old NetMeeting functionality tied
back into XP Messenger (I note that XP still has
NetMeeting lying around somewhere)?

Many thanks.

Greetings,

There is no such option in Windows Messenger currently to make the video window larger. You
have two options -- first, you (and your contact) can install MSN Messenger 6.x which does
have an option to increase the size of the video window (http://messenger.msn.com/Download)
or you can simply use Netmeeting again, by installing Windows Messenger 5 here:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=77c3799f-6388-4193-8002-be55584c1ac1

and then to enable the 'Start Netmeeting' option in Windows Messenger 5, download and run
this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/wm5_addnetmeeting.reg
(if Windows Messenger is running, you'll need to restart it to see the option)

Hi,

Voice should work fine, but Windows Messenger video is limited to Windows XP users only.

If you're having a problem with audio, you're going to have to be more specific about what's
exactly happening, and what your networking configuration is (routers, internet sharing,
etc.).

Right on, John. MSN Messenger does the business. Can I
profess my ignorance and ask Microsoft offers two nearly -
but not quite - identical programme?

This may now be in the wrong forum, but a few question
wrt video conferencing under MSN Messenger:

(1) When I select "Start Video Conference", both
partners in the conference receive a LOUSY picture. When
instead I select "Start Audio Conference" and both
partners during the audio conference click the webcam
icon to send a live video, the picture is a lot better.
Why is that? How can I get the better quality right from
the start when launching a "Video Conference"?

(2) I notice that when I click to "Start Video
Conference", the UDP/TCP port usage seems reasonably
straight forward and I can find a working configuration
for my firewall. But when I want the better picture
quality by mixing the webcam into the "Audio Conference",
the port patterns become much less predictable and I have
not been able to find a workable Outpost config. What's
going on?
