5.25 Floppy Disk Drive

Keith Hearns

Winxp does not read/write my 5.25 floppy disk drive. This
same hardware (computer, disk drive, floppy) worked with
Win98SE without problem. NOw with Winxp the 5.25 floppy
is not working. XP seems to know to add the device, two
floppy lines exist in the device manager. However, the
lines don't read 3.5, 5.25 the lines just read Floppy
disk drive. When I double click on the 5.25 icon in the
My Computer window another window comes up asking my to
format the floppy. If I respond with yes another window
comes up (Format), that window has blank fields like the
OS can't "connect" with the device. WinXp has 5.25
support so what gives? I've called Microsoft without
resolution so far (SRX040320602275). Can you help? Keith

C'mon.... Windows has given meaning to his otherwise useless exsistence. If
he cant use it to show everyone how anal he is, then what good is it?

Nick, Yes. I have a MS Fortran compiler that is on 5.25
floppy that I need to load. Nick, in fact relics abound
in the world of computers. Nick, you might be suprised
that all the modern programming languages have at least
one thing in common...machine language. Without this
relic there is no software to push around the hardware.

Keith:

Try disabling the Floppy in the BIOS in the Mobo, then boot to XP. Check if
the Drive Disappears. then Shut Down, reboot, but alter bios again to be the
Correct Floppy. There is usually options for the 1.44 , 2.88, and 5.25 in
there. XP may just need to start over.

Ok - is your 5.25 a 1.2MB Drive or a 360KB Drive?

You say XP did detect it somewhat - so maybe the A/B Swap in Bios is
enabled, or the Cable you are using is
Wired to only suit 1 Letter? Try another Cable maybe. Usually the Floppy "A"
is on the end, and the 5.25 Inch "B" takes the next spot inward from
there.....usually taking the Flat Edgecard type connection, not the header
type.
Also, if you place a 1.2MB Disk in a 360K Drive, it will ask to format it ,
and vise versa.

techforce, my hardware as is worked with WIn98. Both
floppies (3.5 & 5.25) both harddisk, etc...I'm about 48
hours from going back to Win98SE can calling it quits on
WinXp until Microsoft has let the world debug their
product at our expense. Keith

Maybe the drive is faulty or not the spec that XP wants? Just a guess.

Can you bypass this problem by finding a machine that has a working
floppy disk drive, copy the files to format that does work on your XP or
put into email or lan file server or something?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

The computer world dropped 5-1/4 floppies at least ten years
ago from "the standard" parts list. You should migrate your
software and data to a more modern platform because some day
soon, you will not be able to get working hardware and your
data will be lost. This has happened to lots of data on IBM
and other mainframes.

Apple doesn't even install a floppy on their machines. A
floppy of any type is an extra order item on most new
computers. A floppy is handy for very small files, but a
thumb drive or a card reader can handle many MB.

Find an older computer that still has W95/98 running and if
it doesn't have a 5-1/4 drive, install your drive and copy
the floppies to 3-1/2 inch disks or even a CD.

You're spending too much time trying to save obsolete
technology.

Keith,

I have to agree with Rob here. Getting rid of a better operating system
because your 5.25" floppy drive doesn't seem to work any longer (can you
even buy blank media for those anymore?) is ludicrous at best.

Find yourself a Windows 98 PC, put that floppy drive in there, make it work
there (as you said it worked in 98 before with no problem) and copy those
disks to the hard drive and burn them to CD and move on with your life.
It's not worth getting stressed over. I mean, next thing people will refuse
to move because their 8" floppy disks are no longer working.

The next Windows OS will not even support (natively) installing from ANY
floppy diskettes.. So get ready to drop the 3.5" ones as well. =)

A lot of PC's don't have floppies installed on them either. I've got 4 boxes
on my network and only have a 3.5" on one, just in case I ever need it. I
can get the files to another box VIA the network if I have to. I clean the
drive every month or so to keep it functioning as I haven't actually used it
in about a year.

Gotta get out my 5 1/4" disks and old drive so I can begin programming in
GWBasic again
LOL

All good suggestions listed here. I took the cable and
drive to a system running Win98SE and installed them, and
all worked well. For the life of me why Redmond would
break code? I have the 5.25 edge connector in
the "middle" of the cable connected to the 5.25 floppy
and the end of the cable connected to the 3.5 floppy.

Most of the tech people I've spoked with at Microsoft
don't know about 5.25 floppy and have not a clue how
WinXp is to attached to the floppy. I suggested to the
last tech person to find the test engineer in MS who
tested this part of the OS for some help. Hopefully, this
is not yet another example of poor software development
management at the World's Largest Software Developer.
Hell, Redmond can suck the fun out of using a computer,
not to mention the productivity loss.

Hell I'm about 28 hours from going back to Win 98SE.

You probably should go back to Win 98SE... Suits your needs better.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
