333 mhz AMD w/ 128 mb RAM enough for XP?

I have a 1999 Toshiba Satellite 2545XCDT with an 333 mhz AMD w/ 128 mb RAM.
Will XP run efficiently? Thanks

While it is slightly above the recommended minimum I don't think I would use
the word efficient to describe how XP will run on your machine. I would
probably say that it would run, but barely.

M

maybe not

with that slow a processor, it may glitch trying to keep
up.and the ram is barely enough if you don't run antivirus
or firewall or much else.

Hi,

I've run WinXP on a system like that. Disable the eye-candy, and don't
expect exceptional performance, and it will run adequately. System like that
is really better with Win98 though.

Should I stick to Win 98? I want to get on-lilne with my cell phone and most
of the software says it won't run on 98... any suggestions?

No, it will run very poorly. 333MHz is almost at the bottom of
the range of machines that will run XP, but even worse is having
only 128MB. How much RAM you need depends on what apps you run,
but almost everyone who runs a range of common business
applications finds that decent performance begins around 256MB.

If you have to have XP, I would invest in another 128MB of RAM.

think you should seriously consider getting a more up to date PC...children

Hi,

I'd agree with Ken. If you're going to use it on this system, then at the
very least boost the ram. Go to 512 if at all possible, but at least get
256.

How big's the disk drive ? 3GB is tight for XP, not counting
your applications.

Go to www.crucial.com and figure out if you can add memory to your
model. If you go with XP you'll want to max it out, and memory
doesn't cost much these days.

If you have access to the tools, you can back the image of your
machine to some device, try XP (as long as you don't go online you can
use XP for enough to decide if it's useful, then buy a copy. This is
the only was you can really determine compatibility.)

Turn off all the gui candy, and all the unneeded processes.

Don't let the time it takes to install XP (it will be _very_ slow.)
discorage you. FInish the installation and defrag then try it.
I learned this when I was paid to set up a bunch of old 64 MB machines
with w2k. Setup was dog-slow, but they were paying me by the hour :)
Once set up they ran IE, Office, Outlook and business applications
just just fine.

U should run W2K Prof on this machine... It runs very well with my old 333 AMD. with the same memory ... Save XP until you have a machine average enough to run your applications successfully .

No need to make it personal. And, for your information, it's a fine "box"
that has made me lots of $$ over the years and I don't see a need in
replacing it for one simple application. So there!

Thanks but it sounds like I should simply stick to 98 if I can make it work
for my needs. What would be the advantage of 2K?

Stick with the older machine, keep 98 on it.

Even the new ones fail from time to time.

At the very least you trust it.
It would be like dumping a faithful companion for a Vegas show
girl.....

Well not exactly.

Good advice. I think I'll do what I need to make this new app work for me in
98. Do you have any experience getting on-line with a cell phone and laptop?
And by the way, faithful companions are great and all but those Vegas show
girls: they're something else! Thanks again. -b

My experience with cell phone and laptop is that it is *very* expensive.
Hope you have a healthy budget for the phone calls, or an inexpensive
service.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
