33% CPU Being Used @ System Idle

Hi All,

I have a little problem that I seem to have resolved once before but it's
back and my last fix didn't work this time around.

When at system idle I look @ task manager the CPU Usage is running @ 30%.
Enabling a view of the kernal times shows that the kernel time useage is VERY
close the total CPU usage. This I was told before can indicate a
driver/hardware problem but everything seems to be running OK, no errors in
device manage or the system logs. It is a very noticable impact aswell. I use
my PC quiet heavily and loosing a 3rd CPU is getting quite anoying now.

Can some help me diagnose the cause of this issue please as I'm completely
at a loss with this one.

I'm quiet PC literate...... I've been a sys admin for about 10 years now but
this one has got me. I'm loathed to do another reinstall of windows.......

Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

Its been a long time since I had to find out the info you are after. I can't
remember exactly how I did it but either sysinternals 'process explorer' or
'Security Task Manager' will break down the usage to show you what is
running. I came across another little program that might have limited value
its called 'service process identifier' and is a vbs file that creates a
excel file with process ids. Not sure if its any better than any of the
programs I listed but get it from tech republic.

If the Kernel times is very close or the same as the total usage, it means
that your processor is only handling kernel tasks for the opertating system,
and isn't busy doing anything else. This means that your computer isn't
busy, and it's a good thing.
