2 PCs over ETHERNET (why so difficult)

Dear community:

I have posted this question before, but did not get much help. I am a bit
frustrated and yet do not want to give up. It is a very simple task: got to
computers, both running XP pro and having ethernet adapters. I would like to
exchange data between them, so I have connected them over their adapters. I
ran the network wizard, did not work. I have played around with their
network settings every which way...nothing.

Most estrange symptom: when I try to look into the working group I created I
get the message in one of the computers: "you might not have permission to
use this network resource"

Why should it be so difficult to do such a simple task?

For starters, you need to use either a crossover cable, a hub or a
switch to get two computers to talk.

After that, if both machines are XP then they will autoconfigure IP
settings to some valid values, but this may take a minute after the
secoond machine completes startup.

On each machine do

start -> run > cmd
ipconfig

the IP address shown on the machines should be different.

Still in the cmd window, type:

ping nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

where nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn is the IP address of the other machine.

If the addresses are the same, or ping doesn't work run

ipconfig /all

and look for "autoconfiguration enabled = YES". If you don't see that
then it's your problem.

Until you get the above working doing anything else is a waste of
time, but you need to at least turn off any firewall software on each
machine and make sure both machines name different names and are in
the same workgroup.

Are you using a crossover cable? A standard network cable will not work
between 2 computers.
