2 monitors, one 22" wide ?

I just bought a 22" wide screen Acer LCD monitor because I wanted one
when they dropped below $200.00. Acer recommends setting the video card
for 1680 by 1050 which I did. My Samsung 19" LCD is set for 1280 by
1024.
Maybe I'm not experienced enough but I really don't see where the 22"
has any advantage except in displaying graphs from the Active Trader Pro
by Fidelity and on Outlook
Everything is smaller but spread out, so for Outlook Express I can see
the entire contents of the folders, and read all the titles, date and
size.
On IE the print is much smaller even when I set it to largest.
My nVidia PCI card has the option to rotate what's displayed but there's
no swivel and addon cost about $100.00, too much for a retiree.
I must be missing something, what is it?
Thanks
Hank

You're missing the fact that a 22" "wide screen" monitor displays things
only slightly larger than a 17" monitor that has the regular 4:3 ratio.

"Wide screen" is a joke unless you like to watch wide screen movies on your
computer; otherwise, the benefit is to the manufacturers' profits.

You don't have to use the default resolution. You can set it lower at the
video card settings, then on the monitor itself - use the buttons on the
monitor - turn OFF the resolution notice that will appear at power-on. You
might want to check the monitor manual for this, but it shouldn't be hard to
find.

I use the same setup on my desktop PC, a 19" and a 22". I generally use
the wider screen for things like audio waveform images, and also to have
multiple windows open at once and in the foreground.

Hey guys, thanks for all the tips, at least now I know I wasn't doing
something wrong. I like the monitor so I guess I'll have to find a good
res compromise or live with it at 1680. It's a lot brighter than my
Samsung SyncMaster 914V which may be 2 years old by now. Every year or
so I buy the next bigger size when it goes below $200.00 I started with
13, then 15, then 17 now I have 19 and 22. In th epast I sold the
smaller ones but I think I like having 2 monitors and may keep both.
Mine is a Acer AL2216W and I wonder if anyone knows if Acer makes a
"plugin" swivel stand for this one that doesn't take a lot of space or
have to be clamped to the desk edge?
Thanks
Hank

And you're missing the fact that it's 1680 wide, with is about 656
pixels of are you can put other things on the screen without covering
them.

Not everyone runs apps FULL SCREEN, so you could have your email
client open and your Usenet client or web browser open at the SAME
time and not have one blocked, or at least have both mostly fully
visible.

Many people that don't run apps full screen find they get a lot more
work done by placing apps where they can see them both.

Mine are never full screen. If one is "too covered" to click it active I
just Alt Tab.

I can see the usefulness of having more width available when multi-tasking.
My only beef is because the way monitors are measured - diagonally - leads
people to think that "upgrading" from, for example, a 17" 4:3 ratio monitor
to a 22" 16:9 one is going to get them a nice big image.
