2 email accounts - can't send mail

E

E Williams

I have 2 email accounts. For work I use an IMAP server and my personal
account uses a POP server. I can get one or the other to work on WM but not
both. I have checked the settings provided for both accounts and they seem
to be correct. I tried to send a message from my IMAP mail to my POP mail
and got the following error message:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'monday
test', Account: 'imap.unc.edu', Server: 'smtp.unc.edu', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '550 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Relaying denied.
Proper authentication required.', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error:
550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Help please?

So you are trying to send thru the SMTP.UNC.EDU email server, while at home?
According to http://help.unc.edu/?id=3916#d46170e258
it appears that you should be able to use authentication...

Go to Tools - Accounts - youraccount - Properties - Servers

Under the section "Outgoing Mail Server"
[x] My server requires authentication
OK

If this doesn't work, you should contact the IT dept. to find out how to do
it.

If you are trying to use the Roadrunner email SMTP server while at
work/school, then you can't. You have to be connected to Roadrunner's
network in order to use their email SMTP server. You should be able to
receive email using their POP server, though.

Make sure you have send authentication enabled:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers.
The box for "My server requires authentication" must be checked.

Yes, that often works. Only port 25 is blocked when sending
through an Internet connection other than your home ISP.
