1and1 free web hosting...

1and1.com is offering free web hosting for 3 years, but ya gotta sign up by Jan
15 or so. They claim:

No Banners
No Pop-Up Ads
No Spam
No Hidden Fees
No Sales Calls
No Third Party Distribution
Strict Privacy Protection

Their faq explains "why": "To show our confidence that at the end of the 3
years, you’ll be so impressed with our service, you’ll continue to work with us,
and even recommend us to others. In other words, we’ve decided to invest more in
you and less in our ad agency. Granted, this wasn’t the answer they were looking
for, but we don’t exist to please them. We exist to please you."

Anyway, a quick usenet search of 1and1 seems to suggest that they are legit and
that folks are happy with 'em.

Not an endorsement. I signed up with them but haven't yet decided whether I'll
use them for anything.

With a 5mb limit per month, you won't use them for much.

I signed up too. If nothing else, I got some free software. More
importantly, I can learn how to use a web hosting service without
spending any money. I also registered a domain name through them for
$5.99. That's not free anywhere but for the price of a sub sandwich
I'm
going to have some fun and education for awhile. Seems like a good
deal
to me!

I signed up but I am forced to use their Website Creator (or at least
that's what I got) and I cannot access the program to build the
website. They do offer a license to NetObjects Fusion but I can't see
a way to FTP to their site, and it is totally dead for me now. I send
them messages online asking why, but have yet to receive a reply (3
messages in 3 days). I just wish they would let me try the thing to
see if it is worth anything.

When I click on their Website Creator I get a screen that says
"WebSiteCreator is not ready yet". Not ready for me or not ready at
all? I wonder what experience others are having.

I can't get WebSiteCreator to work either but ftp works just fine.

I'm sorry now that I even looked into this service. It is intended
obviously for the novice so they can " build " a site with their
software. Note: they need to install a patch to your IE browser to get
running - not my cup of tea.
SO - I've found a new server and put my site up there. My freeware page
can be found thru the sig link.
Best to all in 2004,
POKO

I too have had limited success with their Website Creator. I have
three computers on my office lan, one running Win98, one running XP
and the third running ME. I can only access Website Creator from the
ME computer. On the other computers it just opens a new browser window
and hangs with a spinning hourglass. The ftp site works fine.
As far "WebSiteCreator is not ready yet", I believe that was addressed
in the startup documents. I had the same message but followed the
instructions and was able to resolve it. I think the site is
overloaded and in my experience the admin login and access to the
tools, docs etc is very slow. Hopefully the internet access to our web
sites will be be quicker then the control panel login area.
