A basic question. If I connect a 1280 x 1024 LCD monitor to a laptop
whos maximum resolution is 1280 x 768 will I see 1280 x 768 on the
external monitor with black bands top and bottom or will this not work
at all?

windows will allow you to alter the resolution to that of the monitor.
the maximum resolution of the laptop isnt actually what you think - it's
just that windows is currently hiding innapropriate resolutions for your
screen.

Thanks. I got a 1440 x 900 monitor and it works perfectly with both
laptops. It turns out that the laptop with the 1280 x 768 internal
display does support 1440 x 900, but, as you say, you only see that
resolution when you have a monitor that supports it connected.
