0x80040017 Windows product activation

Have a Windows XP system that displays the following message when trying to
log on:

error, 0x80040017
Windows product activation: A problem is preventing windows from
automatically checking the licence for this computer.

The only option here is to click OK and takes me back to XP logon screen.
Anyone know what the problem is here? This PC was working fine yesterday then
suddenly this problem today.

Failing that, please try the Windows Update News Group:

What the Hell does Windows Update have to do with a licensing check

You can try this, before doing a repair install.

Boot into safe mode, then click on Start > Run and type in:

chkdsk /r
