Windows Product Activation Error Code: 0x80040017

I have a valid licensed installation of Windows XP Professional with Service
Pack 2 installed for some time. I had shutdown the computer for 2 days while
I was out of town. Upon trying to startup my system I get the following
message under title WINDOWS PRODUCT ACTIVATION: "A problem is preventing
Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code:
0x80040017"

I have searched the Knowledge Base under both the error code and the text of
the message with no matches. I am an experienced PC person but have never
seen this type of error message. I can boot to safe mode, and have rerun the
Windows SpyWare program Beta. There are no SpyWare programs according to the
scan.

I am at a loss on what to do next to get past this problem without
reinstalling Windows XP. Please advise on how I can get my system back up and
running.

Activation FIX

I worked on a Gateway system running XP Home Edition.

Same error as yours... they had also powered off for a few days.

What worked for me was SAFE mode and ran System Tools - Checkdisk.

It will state you can not run it from safe mode. So select the Schedule option on next reboot.

REBOOT

The system will then run a 5 step process (We found bad blocks on the Gateway)

When it is complete, it then enter the XP Activation program. (I first tried the dial up method but it said I mis-typed the key. So I ended up using the PHONE option. It took about 5 minutes on a Toll free number.

mail me to let me know if this worked : (e-mail address removed)

I think I have found a cure

So far I have found I have a bad hard drive.

There is no check disk, so this is what I did:

  1. Booted in Safe mode
  2. clicked on start
  3. typed in "CMD"
  4. typed "chkdsk /r" or "chkdsk /p" the rep told me to type in /p first and it did not work so /r did work.
  5. It asked me to check the disk at boot up and had to restart to have windows scan my hard drive. It found 20 errors on my hard drive which is so far taking 45 minutes at 60 percent.
