I was told that SP2 clashes with Zonealarm Firewall and
to uninstall it, could anyone tell me what the problems
are and whether the new SP2 Firewall is as competent as
Zonealarm? Or is there another Freeware Firewall that
doesn't clash with SP2?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

Don't believe everything that you hear.
Get the latest Zonealarm.
SP2 firewall does not block outbound traffic, so it is not as good.

Ive got the latest version of Zone alarm installed, it works great but, I
do get a prob from time to time where SP2 won't load ZA at start up and the
computer also then fails to load my AVG anti virus..very strange but I set
to scandisk and reboot then all is fine.....I would also be interested to
learn of any known probs with ZA and SP2.

Thanks

Reading several web forums, Zone Alarm version 5 appears to have problems
with other software, including sometimes SP2 for XP. However, Zone Alaram
version 4.5.594 seems to work and play well with other programs. You might
want to uninstall version 5 and install the older version. However, you
will probably have to search the web for a copy, since I do not think that
it is still available from Zone Labs.

There are holes in the earlier versions of the ZA firewall
that were discovered and patched. I am running SP2 and ZA
has not caused any problems with version 5 series on the
computers that I use or consult on.

Crocket:

I run ZA free v5.1.011 together with the SP2 Windows Firewall without
problems.
Windows Firewall provides outbound control only, whereas ZA is
bidirectional.

You were told wrong. I'm running the latest version of ZA and SP2
here. No problems at all.

ZA (and almost any third-party firewall) is better than the
Windows firewall. The Windows firewall monitors incoming traffic
only, but most third-party firewalls also monitor outgoing
traffic, stopping rogue programs trying to call home.

Thank you everyone for the Zonealarm advice, I will
install it and try it out for a while to see if i get any
problems. If i do i will report back here. Strangely, it
was a conversation with the SP2 online assistant that
told me Zonealarm clashed.
Once again, thank you all.

I've run into problems with ZoneAlarm Free version 5.x that you
might want to bear in mind, although they may not affect you.

One is that the later versions (the 5.x versions) sometimes
prevent Web pages from being downloaded and displayed in my
Mozilla browser. This is a known problem, from what I've read on
groups. It still exists in the latest version. It is intermittent
-- sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn't.

Another problem is that ZoneAlarm prevents the downloading of yEnc
binary files. You seem to be able to download them, but when you
go to look for them in your download directory, they just aren't
there.

I went back to version 4.5.538. People say that version 4.5.594 is
also good.

There are no problems. ZA latest versions turn SP2 firewall off by default.
That is the only "problem" if you see that as a problem.

Not entirely true. It does give you the chance to block certain applications
and that includes both ways.

Nothing at all to do with ZA though. Try running SFC /SCANNOW to see if some
of your system files may be stuffed. If not that, reinstall both ZA and AVG
as they possibly could be stuffed. If neither of those, I suggest you
download Stinger and run it and also make sure you have no spyware. Some
virus/trojans attempt to disable both firewalls and anti virus progs.

Wrong. Early versions of 5 did have that problem but latest doesnt.

Ken,

Not 100% true. It does block outbound on an application basis. I have, for
the fun of it, used the Windows firewall only to see what it is like and it
asks me whether I want to allow the outbound communication of some progs I
use and allow to contact Internet from my machine. I can choose to block
them at that point and thus an outbound communication from my machine would
be blocked by the SP2 firewall.

As far as I know it is 100% true. Can you cite an online resource
that says otherwise?

SP2 and the current Zone Alarm do not clash, but at boot when ZA starts
up it turns off the Windows one as superfluous. That is fine, leave it
like that. The Windows one is to provide a basic level of protection
for those who have not got a third party one

There was talk of the Windows firewall blocking outbound traffic, but it
was not implemented. You are probably thinking of its settings for an
application that you can put in as exceptions to allow incoming packets
to reach the program
