ZoneAlarm Problem

T

Tom

Running XP SP2 and the latest Zone Alarm Free Version 7.332. When I turn
on my PC in the morning, more often than not there is no Internet Access. I
have to reboot to get access. Sometimes if I reboot during the day, I get
the same problem.

Any ideas what is causing this problem? I am about ready to remove it and
try another Firewall or go back the XP Firewall.

Thanks

What makes you think it's the ZA firewall?

if you have DSL, you need to add your internet connection to the trusted zone.
it needs to refresh DHCP, and if not in the trusted zone, it won't refresh,
thus timing out your connection.

Yep, go back to the WinXP Firewall. There was no need to install a
third-party firewall causing problems that you wouldn't have other-
wise.

If I turn off Zonealarm, I still cannot get to the Internet. Am wondering
if it's not IE7 at this point.

The odd thing is if I reboot, it most often comes back.

I have Time Warner's RoadRunner as the ISP, and I use ZoneAlarm
Security Suite. Ever since I started using ZoneAlarm as the firewall in the
Fall of 2006, there has been a long delay when accessing websites for the
first time after startup. There is no delay when accessing mail servers.
I have Google-searched the Internet and the ZoneAlarm forums (fori?),
and the consensus seems to be either live with it or use a different firewall.

Is it possible you're running both firewalls simultaneously?

No, the XP Firewall is off.

First, what makes you think it is the firewall blocking access?

You didn't say (or I missed it by coming into this thread late) how
you access the net (Cable, DSL, dial up, etc.... going through a
router or not.... etc....).

I know of two instances where friends were having this problem. 1st
one had a bad Comcast Cable Modem that kept loosing the connection for
some unknown reason every other day or so. For some odd reason,
rebooting the computer brought the modem back on line. The 2nd person
had a router that was overheating and causing the connection to go
south and again for some odd reason, rebooting the computer would
bring it back on line. Both thought that since rebooting brought the
connection back on, then the problem was with the computer an/or
software which in the end was not so....

Stan

Have you tried other browsers?

Is it the whole Internet, or is it just WWW? (How about e-mail, news,
chat, etc?)

Have you tried using ping and tracert?

Is your PC fine otherwise, or might there be other issues?

And Stan brought up very worthwhile things to consider, too (e.g.,
possible faulty modem).

When did this problem start? Can you do a System Restore to a point in
time before the problem?

What is the malware status of your PC? Have you considered running
HijackThis?

The cable modem is brand new, but that does not mean it is perfect.

My router is 18 months old.

Both of your comments I will keep in mind.

Thanks

No, have not tried other browsers as yet.

Yes, the whole WWW and mail is affected.

Will have to try ping and tracert.

My PC seems fine otherwise.

I cannot restore back to that point. Too long ago.

I have run HiJackThis, SpyBot, Ad-Aware and all is well.

Am considering the modem and router.

Thanks
