Thats being poilite, if you looked up bloatware in the dictionary you
would find an
entry for ZA. I stopped using myself around version 3 IIRC but kept it
on my folks machine because of its user friendliness. However I had
reservations about the whole of the 5 series and v6 was the straw that
broke the camels back. At 5.5 it was getting extremely bloated but ay 6.0
it rendered the old P3@868 with 512MB which my folks now run painful to
use. Everything felt like it was running through treacle and there was
an excess of overly alarmist pop-ups. I uninstalled it completely and
installed KPF 4.2.2. Whilst I recently moved from KPF 4.2 due to its
imminent discontinuation to Outpost 2.7/3.0 on my own machine I figured
if I was going to run an old version of ZA I might as well run a soon to
be old version of Kerio PF which IMO is lighter on resources and a lot
easier to configure with specific rules when you want to. Basically its
just better as far as free firewalls in the same vein (as opposed to
pure rule based jobs) as Zone Alarm and is well suited to less technical
users.

I currently have ZA 5.5 on my dads old P2-366 laptop and its days are
definitely numbered for the same reasons stated above for v6
but with slightly less bloat.

I agree that ZA is user friendly, in my opinion the most user friendly
alternative. That's why we keep it and why it's my choice when helping the
safety indifferent.
However, on the computer I use solely for myself, I also prefer other
firewalls. (At the moment Sygate.)

I just tried all of the old versions of Zone Alarm I could find. None
would remember settings as modified. It seems that ZoneLabs builds
some sort of obsolescence into their work.

I haven't experienced that in ZA 2.6 (W98SE).

I had not experienced it before either in any version of ZoneAlarm. I
am now highly suspicious of the files I downloaded from the site
advertising old versions. I suspect that they may have contained some
sort of key logger as after uninstalling those versions which were not
allowing alterations to program permissions etc. I found that I could
only browse to secure sites. Normal sites were unobtainable in the
browser and FTP refused to actually list. Usenet and Mail seemed to
work OK.

I have reformatted, reinstalled Win98SE and changed the one password
that could have been compromised, now all that is left is to reinstall
all my favourite software. Thank good luck that my ADSL modem has an
inbuilt firewall.

I'll see you all around.
