f you use Zone Alarm this might interest you. How to turn off ZA's log file
(tvDebug.log) and constant disk accessing.

Might as wel copy it here:

ZoneAlarm must be shut down to unlock the log files.
Now go to the Internet Logs folder in the Windows system folder. You
should see several files, including:
fwdbglog.txt
fwpktlog.txt
tvDebug.log
Optional step: delete those three files and re-create three new dummy
empty files with the exact same names.
Right click each of those files and click PROPERTIES and put a check
mark in the READ ONLY check box for each one.
DO NOT TOUCH THE OTHER FILES IN THIS FOLDER. Do not delete them and do
not make them READ ONLY. The other files keep track of what programs
have permission for internet access, and other ZoneAlarm configuration
data.

ZoneAlarm will now work fine, just with disk logging blocked.

Didn't work for me. I unplugged the computer from the Internet;
turned of ZA; did the "Read Only" trick.

After a reboot, the "Read Only" instruction had been unticked --
presumably as part of ZA's boot sequence.

WinXP Pro; ZA 6.5.722.000.

In my case using v4.5.594, ZA appears to be writing to the log even
though the Read Only attribute is still switched on! Odd.

Wouldn't it be possible to write a simple batch file or script
unloading ZoneAlarm, deleting the files, restarting ZoneAlarm?

Possibly a batch file. What I've done is to create a zero byte file
in the same directory with the same name and switched on the R
attribute to see how that performs. ZA seems to have started OK
but I'm not sure yet if it will start writing to it. Another possible
solution is to enter the filenames(s) into ccleaner/custom marked for
deletion each time it's run, although that does raise the problem of
how to re-create them. Perhaps that where a batch file could be
used at boot up.

It is rewriting onto mine, no matter what I do. I first tried simply
read-onlying it, that didn't work, then I deleted the original files,
created blanks in notepad with the same names, and as soon as I turned ZA
back on the tvDebug.log had crap in it.

I guess it's time to get rid of this thing, so what is the best alternative?
Kerio?

Judge on the basis of its performance as a firewall, not whether it
continues writing to the log files or not. Other posters have more
experience of other firewalls than me.

Writing may depend on which version you're using. In my case it's an
old paid-for v4.5.594 and although it did appear to write to the log
files with the R attribute switched on, it isn't doing so now. Since I
created zero-byte files ZA has been running fine but not writing to
the logs.
