I'm presently using Zone Alarm version 4.5.538 and I keep getting a notice
that I should update to the latest version. Is there really any reason
that I should, and has anybody had any trouble with the installation/use of
same?

the new versions of ZoneAlarm has advanced virus protection protocols
and supposedly other new protections. I have installed the new versions
on Win98SE without any problems.

I'm using a slightly older version. I tried the newer versions and
began having connection issues. I'm happy with the older version :)

Personally, I recommend downgrading to version 2.6 and finding your virus
protection elsewhere. It's just as effective a firewall as later versions.

I'm running 4.5.538 also, although mine is the Pro version. Before my
one-year free upgrade period expired, I received those same offers to
upgrade but never quite got around to it. Just shortly after my
opportunity had expired I was glad that it had, because I began reading
about lots of problems with subsequent versions of ZA in the GRC
newsgroups, and in the ZoneLabs forums: http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs
It was just shortly after our version that ZoneLabs introduced antivirus
protection as part of the Zone Alarm package, and that's where the
problems seemed to begin. I don't know whether or not the current version
has finally fixed all the earlier problems because I stopped bothering to
read about their fixes. That's not the first time that "new and improved"
versions of ZA have caused its users headaches, but to be fair the same
has been true for other companies' software- newer isn't always better.

A "ShieldsUP!" scan at http://www.grc.com/ will verify that version
4.5.538 has you properly protected, and your personal experience will tell
you how stable it is on your system. If it ain't broke...

Regards,
Ian.

Thanks to all who responded. I think I'll just let it be, for now. I have
adequate av elsewhere.

An "adequate av" (I assume you mean antivirus) has nothing to do
with a firewall. You need both. Personally, I'm running ZoneAlarm
4.5.538 also, and find it does the job for me. The later versions
of ZA wouldn't allow me to download multipart binaries in yEnc,
and had other problems, so I ditched them and went back to the
older version.

By both, you mean a router, firewall and virus protection? Yes!

Chak,

You may know this already, but....

To keep from getting those pesky "reminders", right click on the ZA
Quick-launch icon, and go to the ZA program setup (can't remember the
exact name on vers. 4). Somewhere in there you will see an option such
as "Check for updates" and a frequency (wkly/monthly). Just uncheck
that, and they won't be trying to sell you any more!

Mercy Buckups! I always told it to remind me in 60 days, but turning it
off altogether is much better.

Thanks, I've done just that.
