Zip files taking forever to unzip in Vista

G

Guest

Using either the built in windows zip utility, or Winzip, it takes a very
long time to uncompress anything. For example, it takes about 1.5 hours to
uncompress a 50 MB file, but if I take that file to my Solaris box and
uncompress it there, it takes about 15 seconds. This happens regardless of
the program I use, and it only happened after I installed vista. I don't
know if it's a security issue that is causing overhead or what, but it's very
frustrating. Anyone have any recommendations or experiencing anything
similar?

Thanks!

I don't have a solution but I can tell you I do not experience the same
thing. So it shouldn’t be a problem with WinZip and I doubt it's a problem
with the built in Zip support. I can’t find any related issue in the beta
NG either.

If you're allowed access to the file and it does eventually unzip then I can’t
say it's a security issue either. No amount of Vista overhead should cause
that kind of delay.

Are you willing to try another app? WinRAR

Did you have something decent to add to this thread? I believe Sharra would
like some help.

Uninstall WinZip, reboot your PC. Install WinZip again running as admin.
WinZip may be corrupt.

So it doesn't happen on your PC. If everyone who uses WinZip replied that
"it works OK here", then there would be a million posts. Why should she try
another app? She has WinZip and probably paid for it. So you are driving
your KIA in for service and the oil light comes on. The Service Rep says,
Hey Justin, my light doesn't come on, how about going over to Saturn and
getting one of their cars?

Trying WinRAR is free. Buying another car is not. My post serves as a note
that Winzip is perfectly function in Vista. If 1 million people replied
with the same thing then you should cry about the 999,999 duplicates. Got
anything else to complain about or can we continue to help this person?

Yep, no doubt, which is why I highlighted the NON HELP you gave her.

You damn fool, you haven't helped her at all by flapping your gums.
You only responded to bolster your false claim that you "help" people
when in fact 99% of what you do is attack people because you suffer
from one of the biggest inferiority complexes I've ever seen in all my
years of reading posts from all kinds of kooks in all kinds of
newsgroups. By far, you Justin are most insecure, always lying, always
angry most self-important no nothing poster of them all. If they
handed out awards for best fake, you'd win hands down.

I guess you don't have anything decent to say. Sorry Sharra, just ignore
this guy. This is all he does. He goes around fighting with people and
yelling at them for fighting when he's the only one fighting. I know, it
doesn't make much sense but I guess ignoring him is the best thing.

Too bad you can't follow you own advice. I'm sure Sharra has figured
out all by herself what you are Justin.

Right click on the zip file, click Properties, click "Unblock" in the
General tab.

Hope this helps

I have Vista Home and I am also getting ridiculously long decompress
times with zip files. I am currently unzipping a 2MB file downloaded
from PHPBB.com and it is taking about 30 minutes. When I was running XP
it would unzip a similar file in maybe 15-20 seconds.

I tried going into the zip properties, but there was no checkbox marked
"unblock".
Have you installed patch KB938979 yet?

I recall having similar problems, but after installation of this patch
those problems disappeared.

The same problem here.

I have installed AlphaZip, a multi archive program that integrates perfectly
in the shell and does a great job.
Lightning fast and almost all archive types are supported.
You can find it here : http://www.alphazip.com/index.php
Another issue could be not enough memory. Vista runs in 512 meg of
ram, but LOVES 2 gig!

On my computer the problem has gone away, presumably after updating
Vista. The problem occurred with ZIP files downloaded from a
newspaper site. If that is your problem, open the file propertiesd,
uncheck "protected" or something to that effect (in french version,
it reads "protégé"). Then unzipping should be fast.

A downloaded file?

There should be an "UNBLOCK" button on the General tab of the Properties page.
