ZIP decompression fails & is v slow

to "Using the Vista OS ZIP decompressor produces two problems.
1. Often though not always, using the right click context menu to Extract
all..results in an error message "The extraction process was not completed."
The extraction process does howeevr start on clicking a second time. However
then the problems really start.
2. The decompression proceeds at an unbelievably slow rate. Depending the
size of the file. A 79MB file containing 139 items took nearly 2 mins to
unzip. With WinRAR however it took 6 secs. With bigger files the
decompression times seem to go up exponentially! A 600MB file reporting that
5 hrs would be requited to unzip it. Incidentally WinZIP 11 seems to have the
same problem. Only WinRAR seems to do the business. Any comments?

OS = Vista Ultimate upgraded using Windows Anytime Upgrade from Home Premium.
HW = Intel Core Duo T7200 2Ghz; 2GB RAM; 200GB Sata HDD

Rodehall:
I switched to WinRAR two years ago and never went back.
It is an excellent program, Vista compatible, and relatively cheap.

Thankyou Carlos ..I have been using WinRAR by default for some time now. It
just does what it says on the can excellently. Maybe I am naive, but I think
MS need to be reminded that it is unaceptable that such a basic system
utility can make it to RTM product and yet be so hideously flawed. If MS
can't do it then they should stop reinventing the round wheel as a square
wheel and just buy in the best from elswhere. The things they do buy in e.g.
"windows defender" as it now is, seem to be the "also rans".

I'm finding it slow as well, and have read that this could be because of
Defender...I thought that I read that Defender (or the Security Center) will
do restore points when certain actions are taken. I've tried disabling the
program / features - but none of this has sped up the extractions.

I'm tempted to do an uninstall and see what happens. Of course, any other
advice would be great since I'm sure people are going nuts when 2.5 meg files
take 30 minutes to extract.

Thanks!

I wouldn't invest the time and effort with a re-install. This issue is in
forums now all over the place. It's obviously a flaw for which there is no
obvious MS work-around.
(use something like WinRAR or now Win ZIP 11.1)

Somthing happened between WinZip 11 and 11.1 to speed things up
dramatically, but for now WinRAR is still my weapon of choice - reliable,
accurate and faasssstt!

With regard to Defender I have gone into services and turned it off. It has
never found anything worth finding, in my experience - wereas Spybot or
Adaware are highly regarded and seem to do the business.

Thanks for the reply!

I too usually use winrar - but for the sakes of resolving an issue, I was
curious if there was a fix.

I'm also a big fan of spybot, but again, I'm just exploring things that
Vista has to offer with it's Defender program. Whether or not Def was the
cause of the slow zip extract - a few sites have suggested this, but to my
testing it wasn't.

Ah well.
