Zero not a number?

Each year I update my companies "proposal log." A handy little
speadsheet that allows the salesmen to draw sequential quotation
numbers, and allow us all to find fairly easily info- date, company,
equipment quoted, etc.

The last 3 years I've had no problem creating a new job book for the
new year using Excel 98. I copied/renamed the file, deleted all data
in the columns, and generated new numbers for the "quotation #"
column.

This year I have Excel 2002, and it doesn't want to allow me to use the
same format of numbers- 040100 and on up. It refueses to allow the
number to start with a 0. That was a simple fix with the 98 version,
just put the cell format to text rather than number. But 2002 is being
uncooperative.

Anyone know how I can make get it to accept a number starting with 0?

P.S. I've tried changing the cell format (tried general, text, and
special), and I've also tried using the replace command- both to no
avail.

Use Format | Cells... | Number tab and then select Custom. In the Type box
enter 000000.

You can then continue to use the contents of the cell as a number if you
want/need to.
