Using xp pro, I have a friend who has noticed multiple desktop files starting
with FR and then various numbers with an extension of .tmp and has no idea
what generated these files, anybody have a clue?
an example is FR8.tmp details state unknown program to open.

I suspect malware or adware.

You could try using Sysinternals's Process Explorer utility to watch
and see what application is creating those files.

That's pretty much what I suspected also, the problem is that this is a work
computer, and I don't have admin level to install anything, I think I'll
suggest to my co-worker to talt to the IT dept, even thou it takes them
forever to come over.
since we use a local lan, it isn't just one pc that is doing this, it's each
computer he logs onto, and I fairly certain he doesn't go on the internet
where he shouldn't.

Your IT Department should be your first port of call, regardless
of the time it takes for them to respond. If you have concerns
about this then you should ask your manager to discuss it with
the IT Manager.
