Zalman fan mate speed controller

R

Robert J. Grimes

I have this resistor controller for my cpu fan and it works great. However,
it is INSIDE the computer case so I can't easily change the speed if things
start cooking inside. Has anyone figured out a way to hook it up so it can
be put outside the case OR an alternative that will allow me to adjust it
without opening the case?

Thanks

There are plenty of fan controllers that mount in an external 3
1/4" or 5 1/2" bay.

If you wanted to keep using your current Zalman controller
(assuming it's the type with a knob for adjustment) you could
take an unused bay cover plate, drill hole in it, and mount fan
controller up against it so knob is accessible. Often such holes
need to be drilled a bit undersized, small, then enlarged, or
used a step-drill.

Otherwise the drilling might tear the relatively soft plastic.

Got a punch-out in the backpanel or rearside? Are the wires long enough to place the potentiometer in the case outside (if not, use http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/product/view.asp?idx=115&code=017 although you could make one, too)? If so, pop out the punch-out and use double-sided foam tape or self-stick velcro to mount it outside the case.

Also checkout bay controllers from Vantec and Thermaltake. A whole bunch are listed at http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=list&catalog=11&DEPA=0&order=price&sort=asc.

Or use a thermo-controlled fan.
