Zalman CPU cooler

N

Navid

P4 2.6C on Asus P4P800 deluxe not overclocked.
I have turned off my case fan.
The only fans I have are the PSU (FSP 350W) single fan set to its min.
RPM and the P4 retail CPU fan, set to RPM control (bios).
My CPU is at 32C when idle with the CPU fan RPM at 2100.
When I run the burn-in wizard in sisoft sandra, the CPU goes up to 46C
and the CPU fan RPM goes up to 2200. The motherboard never goes
above 46C.
I find the CPU to be noisy.

My objective is to have a quiet PC without damaging anything.

Is 6500B (flower) http://www.zalman.co.kr/english/product/cnps6500b-alcu.htm
quieter than 7000A
http://www.zalman.co.kr/english/product/cnps7000a-alcu.htm?
Has anyone had experience with both of these coolers?

Will my system be OK with a flower cooler?

I intend to get a Sapphire Ultimate (passive cooling) 9600 pro AGP.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Navid

I have used the Zalman "flower" heatsinks on P3's, C3's,
Athlons, and Durons, but not on a P4.

For a C3, they are fine up to about 1 GHz MHz, and with a
P3 up to about 700 MHz but above that you often need to have
a fan to provide some airflow over the heatsink. It can,
however, be a very slow and quiet fan.

With an Athlon or Duron I have alway used a fan.
One exception - I have used it on a 1300 MHz Duron
with no nearby fan. That Duron runs at about 58'C -
technically within the safety limits. With a large
slow (and silent) fan blowing over the heatsink,
38'C for an AthlonXP 2400 is typical.

The Zalman site has good info on using fans with this
heatsink on fast/hot processors.

sheer

Zalman CNPS6500B-ALCU Copper/Aluminium Heatsink & 92mm Fan
Use this setup on a 2.8 HT on a P4C800E
Idle temp is 32 gaming 49, with the fan adjuster set to the slowest setting.
Games I play would be basic stuff not high end, eg Colin McRae etc
I am not a big gamer so you may need to get some idea from a more stressed
system with a similar setup.
The setup is quiet but by no means silent, replaced the standard fan
heatsink that the CPU came with the Zalman and it is about 1/2 the noise.

You would have lower overall noise with a front and rear case fans, because
that way the noisiest fan (CPU fan) wouldn't get so high.

Maybe you need to place the computer tower in a different location.

Hook those case fans back up!

Right there on the websites quoted is the db range for the heatsinks!
Lower is better.
You can't have your cake and eat it too. I built a super quiet amd 2100
using an oversize 70mm heat sink/fan, it runs hot!

Are you saying that 46C (115F) is too high and may damage the CPU?
I thought that those who overclocked their machines had temps
much higher than that.

"The motherboard never goes
above 46C."
Which is it?
High case temps kill everything!
Hook the case fans back up, end of story!
and thread, vbg
