I am trying to install Windows Messenger 5.1 and I receive the
following error message when I do so:
Product: Windows Messenger 5.1 -- Your computer has a newer version of
Windows Messenger 5.1 than the one you are trying to install. To
install an older version, first remove the current version (click
Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add or Remove, Windows Messenger 5.1),
and then run this Set Up again.

There are no versions of Windows Messenger listed in Add/Remove
Programs.

I have removed Windows Messenger from Add/Remove Programs ->
Components.

I have tried Start -> Run: msiexec /x
{C3A6819F-62D3-4750-AF1C-28206DDF2C2E} but that returns the error,
"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

I have tried removing HKLM and HKCU
/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/MessengerService keys.

I have run messenger.msi /lv and found this section (let me know if
someone would like to see more):

I forgot to mention, I also installed MSN Messenger 7.5 and then did a
clean uninstall of it (Add/Remove Programs) but that also did not
resolve the issue.

Any ideas besides completely rebuilding my system? There must
(assuming) be a way to forcibly/manually remove whatever is
conflicting. I am not scared of the registry, the command line or debug
logs so don't hesitate to suggest something crazy (as long as it gets
the job done)!

A few ideas:

- download the latest version again:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/b/3/eb3b95c6-b6e3-47f6-bcd1-466ad173f407/messenger.msi
and put the file in an empty folder before installing.

- before installing WM 5.1:
. try removing .tmp files in C:\Windows\Installer.
. or try renaming (or emptying) C:\Windows\Installer.

- execute this command:
msiexec /unreg

then this one:
msiexec /regserver

- you could use File Monitor to try to understand what's going on with
this infobmp file ("Error 2851: The data for the icon infobmp is not
valid").

File Monitor:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/FilemonNt.zip

I was finally able to get the latest Windows Messenger installed. I had
to do the following command:
msiexec /i messenger.msi REINSTALLMODE=aums

This forced the installation ignoring any version checking that was
being done.
