You have the BEST card but only for about TEN MINUTES or less. All
this fuss to have "the best" card is making some people rich and
others with a bunch of cards in storage.

I won't fall for this and that best card, board, monitor, or whatever.
I'll buy what I can afford and not to show off.

True, some of the younger folk, or the less mature crowd buy high-end gear
for nothing more than bragging rights. HOWEVER, some people buy high-end
(or the very best) because they want the best computing experience possible,
or they want longevity before having to upgrade again. This was the case
for me when I got my 9800 Pro in the summer of 2003...I wanted something
that will go the distance. I'd say I have succeeded, especially since AA
and AF aren't important to me and I do almost all of my gaming in 1024x768.
Here I sit more than a year after getting my 9800 Pro and I'm still very
happy with it.

Unless you were one of those who purchased a 9700 Pro when it was first
released. I needed a new card to work with Morrowind and there was No
competition to this board for over 6 months. And after 2 years it is
still near the top of the heap.

I am still happy I bought my 9700 Pro 18 months ago, but if you think
it's still near the top of the heap, you need to check some recent
benchmarks.

Benchmarks Schmenchmarks. I should have never let 3DMark03 talk me into
upgrading my "almost 9600 Pro" to real 9800 Pro. Far Cry ran fabulously in
medium detail (textures high) in 1024x786. Now, in order to run it at
1280x1024 and high detail i have to live with the ugliest of slowdowns
imaginable, zooming and the aricraft carrier are a real threat to my
framerate. We are not amused.

Whoa. You replaced a 9600 with a 9800 and lost performance? Something's
wrong somewhere.

I also cranked up the quality a little, but I get a significant loss in
playabílity one res step and one quality step (medium->high) better, despite
the 9800 Pro performance. If I had known that, I would've stuck with the
pseudo-9600 pro. Granted I would have not seen those awesome light FX - but
150 bucks is a little steep for a few more FX...

True, but I'd still say the 9700 Pro is a solid mid-range card even now.
That's pretty good for something that's been out for two years. It was near
the top of the heap until recently...but I'm still seeing supply problems of
the new high-end cards that are supposed to be out now. Most shops, if they
do get them in, sell their meager quantity quickly. Most of the new
high-end cards I see are Sapphire or Asus X800 Pro's, both of which are
priced out of the range of most of us mere mortals. :)

I'll stick with ATI all the way and not because I'm a luddite. I'm
Canadian and support my own. Rather see my neighbor keep his job than
someone else in another country.

Ten minutes and back to the wallet for another card.

Yep, the old benchmark chart. It's never fast enough so buy another
card to keep up with the Jones.

Still great!

Yeah I also bought a 9700 PRO about a year and a half ago.It's still a
great card for gaming.I play most of my games at 1024x768 or 1152x864
and Framerates are great.I played Doom 3 at Medium settings with 2x TAA
and 8x Aniso and I never had any slowdowns.
But I will have to replace it in 2 or 3 months 'cause I'll be buying a
new 17" LCD and I will have to play all games in 1280x1024.I don't think
that 9700 PRO will be able to handle games at that resolution with at
least Medium settings.I think I'll buy a X800PRO VIVO.

Poor bastard, now he has a 9600 and a 9800 and he's scratching his head.
Call me one too I got more hardware than Newegg.

It's still an upper midrange card, stil in the group of true gaming cards.
The 9600 pro would be like a bottom end gaming card imo.
