I get 'you are not authorized to view this page' from ebay and the Citroen
site and others. It seems not to affect my access, but many pictures are
shown as placeholders only. I have all available updates for XP SP2 and
Windowsupdate offers no new ones. Is there anything I can do, or is it the
websites' problem?

This could be an ActiveX setting thing in Internet Options>Security>Custom.
Go there through Control Panel and set the ActiveX objects to Enable or at
least Prompt. Remember what you changed and alter it back if it makes no
difference.

Thanks Roger. All the Active X settings are now either enabled or prompt,
but I still get the error 403. On e-bay I am invited to click a link to
e-bay.doubleclick, which looks suspicious. I haven't yet restarted after
altering two settings, and I'll clear the cache and try again.

I have now restarted and cleared the cache. The Citroen page now has the
error 403 message on the right sidebar instead of top centre, and the ebay
version is a complete message rather than in bits. The image placeholders
are still there, as is the doubleclick.net link. Worth a try though.

I can't think this will help with the Citroen site but e-Bay might benefit
from being added as a trusted site - with an https prefix - in the Trusted
Site zone in Internet Options. Somewhere there's a "never compress graphics"
setting which may help the placecard situation but I'm blessed if I can find
it at the moment.

There's a never compress raphics among the AOL options, but I don't and
never have allowed AOL on my machine. I'm still wandering around in the
Active X and any other graphics settingsI canfind, but that red x keeps on
appearing.

SP2 places restrictions on the use of Active X in the general Internet
Zone. If there is a site you trust - eg eBay - it is best to leave
these in place (for untrustworthy ones) and take Trusted Sites, click
Sites, enter http://*.eBay.com in the pane and Add (unchecking the box
about restricting to secure sites)

Thanks Alex. I'll take note of that.

I have now resolved the problem of the red x, which is down to Zone Alarm,
presumably its popup blocker or ad blocker or something like it. In
Standard Zone Alarm, which I have, there appears to be no way to edit rules
or even see them, as the 'expert' tab is missing, so it seems the only thing
I can do if I want images on all web sites is to close down Zone Alarm and
revert to the XP firewall. I imagine this is Zone Labs' way of forcing you
to buy the Pro version, where rules can be altered. As I have no intention
of being blackmailed in this way, Zone Alarm is for the chop, as it has been
several times in the past when I have had to remove it because it interferes
in one way or another with my surfing pleasure. Bad Zone Alarm! I have
lived with the XP firewall for a few years now with no problems at all. If
anyone can show me where I am wrong, feel free.

Thanks to Alex and Roger for helping me.
