Yet another Code 12/VGAsave problem

sands

I have an emachines T2460 system that I'm trying to add a Radeon 7000
video card to. The motherboard is, I believe, an Albatron (there isn't
any name mentioned in the manual, but according to VIA, the only maker
to use the chipset I've got (VIA KM266) is Albatron). I'm running
WindowsXP.

I:
1) Installed the Radeon.
2) Booted and disabled the onboard video in BIOS.
3) Booted to Windows, installing the drivers for the card.
4) Rebooted, and I get a code 12 error message, and the display
adapter listed is VGAsave. I cannot change this, uninstall this, do
*anything* to it, other than disable it (which, if I do this, leaves
me with no display, and I have to go back to the last known good)

I have installed the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers. I have flashed my BIOS
with the latest version I can find. I have gotten the latest XP
drivers from ATI. I have turned off pre-fetching (someone suggested
it, and it doesn't hurt). I have uninstalled the drivers and then
reinstalled them in safe mode. I've fiddled with the relevant BIOS
settings (not many, but I've tried every configuration). I have read
*every* *single* *thread* I can find on Deja that even mentions
VGAsave, and tried all these things. I have Googled. I have called
ATI. I have called Albatron and emachines. I've even called Microsoft.
It seems like tons of people are having this kind of problem, but no
one seems able to fix it - or, if they can, it was one of the things I
did above that didn't work.

I know the card is good - it works just fine on another system (one,
alas, that I cannot use because it is not mine). I know the machine is
good: I tried another AGP card, and it worked fine (but, alas, that
card is not sufficient for my purposes).

Nothing I've tried has gotten rid of the code 12 error. And I cannot
use the features of the card. My monitor *used* to be able to get a
nice 84khz refresh with my old card, but now it is at 60, which is
giving me a *massive* headache and eyestrain. Even worse, I can't play
Star Wars: Galaxies.

Please, please, o ATI gurus, help me. I'll name my first born after
you, once I have one. Heck, I'll *give* you my first born. Or second,
whichever one you prefer, if only someone can help me get this thing
working. And, once this does work, I'll write up a step-by-step on how
to do it, so no one else ever has to ask again :)

Oh, and, please, don't just say "Get another card, loser" unless it
really, REALLY is that this card simply will not work with the Via
KM266 chipset or XP or something like that.

Thanks in advance,
Sam
