I have a small home network. It was working. I upgraded my NIS to a 2006
version. One of the computers on the network was on and able to access the
network. My other computer was not here and off the network. Today, neither
one can access the network main computer, even with NIS disabled.

I can't seem to figure this one out. Help.

I can see the other two computers on the network from the main computer and
access the shared files on them. I can access either of the other two
computers through the network but neither of them can access the main
computer, so I don't see anyproblem with the router. I am using a DSL to
connect out.

What's the exact message that you're seeing?

You could look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, so we can diagnose the problem.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely
(download browstat!):

Computer\\\ is not accessible. You may not have permission to ues the
resource. Not enough server storage is available to process the command.

I have had access before, it is only after the upgrade to NIS 2006 that this
started to happen. I did go to your tech papers and downloaded browstat. I un
zipped it, but didn't see where it went. If I try to run it I get nothing. I
can ping the main computer from both of those being denied access so I'm sure
that there is connection still. I did run the ipconfig/ all and the IP
rounting and WINS proxy are = NO. I'll run it on the other two.

Jack, When I go to enter the IP addresses in this location, both of them, the
computers being denied acess, I am prevented with a note say that they
already are trusted.

I was betting on that one. Read the article please.

Chuck, I may be a littke thick here. What am I looking for in your tech
pages. DO I need to go into my network setting and specify all the IP
addresses? What good does the home network wizard do? And why would NIS screw
everything up when it upgrades? I am not snipeing at you, but it is
frustrating to have a functioning network go down. I am also being denied
access to my shared printers and that IS a problem.

What useful information would yo like to see from my IPCONFIG, Workstation,
and Server command print outs?

Chuck, I did go to regedit, and could navigate to the parameters keys. I see
that on your help blog that some have gone as high as 48. What can go wrong
with higher numbers? It is set at 11. I am running an older Dell, 4400 that
has a 1.7gh P4 processor.

Chuck, I did bump up the stack to 24 and the access is working again. Thanks.
Why couldn't the good folks at Norton/Symantecs have directed me there?
ARGH!%*&$

Now that it is working, should I need to fine tune it? Is a value of 24 OK?
What does the value represent? I really appreciate the help. I ran accross
that with a WD external hard drive as well. Is that the same stack? Back to
this issue, Should I change it on only the one computer or should I change
it on all or them?

and any idea why auto update for windows works but if I try to use it
manually, NIS 2005 prevents me from accessing the update page?

Eric, bewildered and befuttled , user of computers : )

Eric,

I remember the first time I heard about this setting. I had sort of the same
questions.

Unfortunately, the only references, that I know of, are the Microsoft and
Symantec documents.

You change the setting on the server - the computer sharing the data. If you
have multiple servers, each running NIS, you'll want to check each one.

The Windows Update process, both automatic and manual, is a mysterious process.
Check the Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors associated
with the download and install processes, automatically or manually started.
