Sometimes on the right end of the task bar, a yellow triangle containing an
exclamation point is visible. If I click on it, it disappears. If I point at
it, no message appears. There is nothing in the startup folder so what is Wxp
trying to tell me? Also, what is the name of this icon?

Visit the Windows Update web site and download the
recommended critical updates, then reboot your PC.

Everything under Task Manager is disabled so why would Wxp alert me to
download Updates?

Because everything is not disabled.

Open the Task Manager and click on the Processes tab.

There are two startup folders. And at least 13+ other places that programs
can start from. Not to mentions services.

Is the motherboard an Asus unit with the on-board SoundMax
system?

I have 5 ASUS motherboards with onboard audio, and none of them have the
problem described.

Like to read what the OP writes in response. The SoundMax icon
in the taskbar is, IIRC, a white triangle in a blue square. When
any one of the mixer settings is set outside of the default range
by an application or manually by the user, a yellow triange with
an exclamation mark replaces the SoundMax icon. It is rare but it
happens and this is how we learn about it from the SoundMax Help
files.
