"Yellow Exclaimation Marks by 3 WAN Miniport Devices"

since I recovered from a system failure, I noticed that I am left with 3
yellow exclaimation marks next to the 3 following devices....

WAN Miniport (IP)
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Driver File Details: C:\windows\system32\drivers\ndiswan.sys

WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Driver File Details: C:\windows\system32\drivers\raspppoe.sys

WAN Miniport (PPTP)
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
Driver File Details: C:\windows\system32\drivers\raspptp.sys

I cannot uninstall either of them as it states "Failed to uninstall, This
device may be required to bootup your computer"

I have checked for the 3 named driver files, all are present....

If I try to reinstall the driver for the 'WAN Miniport (PPTP)', it tries but
comes back with the messeage "An error occurred during the installation of
this device, A service installation section in this INF is invalid."
I hazard to guess which INF file it refers to....

The remaining WAN Miniport (L2TP) is apparently working properly according
to Dev-Manager
Driver File Details: C:\windows\system32\drivers\rasl2tp.sys

Any Ideas Guys...

Charles...

Tried it in safe mode, all I get is a brief glimpse of a dos window, and
then gone...

In normal mode, it works as you would expect, it takes a while, but, doesn't
make any difference....

The problem still remains...

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your network
adapter?

As for the INF file, I believe it's C:\WINDOWS\inf\netrasa.inf.

One observation, you cross-posted this question to a number of
XP newsgroups except the one where the networking experts hang
out.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web.

Good luck

Charles...

Thanks, you know, I never thought of
'microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web.'

Just to make things worse, I noticed above the iffy ones, 3 devices called
'net'
I tried removing them, believing them to be linked to the 3 iffy wan
devices... the system would not let me, so I thought I would click on update
driver for them.... windows went off doing its bit....

Low & behold.... I now have 6 wan miniport devices with yellow exclaimation
marks on.... it feel like quick sand....

& I cannot remove any of them coz they all say they are needed to boot the
system.... arghhhh....

C

Charles...

This is definately like quick sand....

I thought I would try to install the device drivers via devcon.exe, the
MS_pppoeMiniport, ndiswanip, ptiminiport, pptpminiport & the L2tpminiport
from the windows\inf\netrasa.inf

I now have an aditional 3 unknown devices listed in dev manager, being now
that I have 9, I decided to disable the lot....

I rebooted, all is the same, I still cannot uninstall any of them, nor get
any to work...

What else can I try... ?

I give up! I tried duplicating your problem on my test system.
No luck there. I made numerous attempts to uninstall those 3
WAN miniport devices and encountered the same warning message
you saw.

If you haven't found a solution to this problem, it may be time
to try a repair installation. Take a look at this article for
more info,

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Good luck

Charles...

I created an XP Home cd with SP2 slipstreamed....

then I tried a repair install.... it would consistantly stop with 34 minutes
to go nomatter how long I left it....

So I had to bite the bullet & resort to an install over the top instead...
This went well, as planned for once...

I installed all my standard drivers, all back to normal except for
reintalling the normal software...

my documents etc are still fully intact in folders, the only things I seem
to have lost is my previous emails....

whether I can undelete those.... ? any ideas.... ?

Have you tried searching your hard disk using "*.dbx" without the quotes
as your search criteria. I am assuming you are using Outlook Express.
The date stamp will tell whether you have current of old folders. You
may need to do a File, Folder, Compact All whilst Offline to get a current
time
stamp on your new folders to distinguish them from any old folders still on
disk.

Hope this helps.
