Yahoo vs. AOL

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this, but I thought I
would give it a try.
I am thinking of giving up AOL, since I have cable modem and can just use
Yahoo. I have used AOL forever it seems and it is very user friendly. But
I have heard from lots of people and techs that AOL sucks basically (excuse
my language). My girls and I like the IM the best and it is convenient.
But I am paying $15 a month for it also.
Has anyone here compared the two? Is Yahoo just as user friendly? Can you
do the IM's and get your news and interesting links like AOL has? I can't
see having both and if it does in fact louse up a computer I don't want it.
What are your thoughts on it? Thanks.

Well, you can use a program made by AOL called AIM ( Aol instant Messenger)
from http://www.aim.com . As far as user friendly links go AOL has it but
the IM problem can be easily solved. Now just a question, can you elaborate
on how you would use Yahoo! more? As well as what you'd use it for.

Another thing to watch out for is that I believe ( because I have had this
expierience) that when you do cancel your AOL account the same name cannot
be used as an AIM Screen Name, so before you transfer if you decide to,
remember to message all your pals and give them the correct AIM Screen name
you choose.

AOL has its problems but, if you like the interface and the content, stick
with it.. you can try out the Yahoo or MSN Home page easily enough..
www.yahoo.com and www.msn.com .. if you do decide to change, AOL Buddy will
allow you to keep contact with other AOL users.. but you will lose many
features that you find easy and useful now..

I found this webpage authored by somebody who is obviously a fan and long
time user like yourself..

AOL is a hand holder.. some of the voices you have heard speak against AOL
do not like that feature, do not like the way AOL embeds itself, do not
appreciate having to format the drive to be rid of it.. I don't like AOL
either, and for the same reasons as above.. but I would hate to be
responsible for taking you out of your safety zone into areas you may never
like..

Good Evening, PC!

Clear up a couple of items for me if you would. Your message source
information leads me to think that Comcast is your ISP. Is this correct?
If so, what are you using AOL for? What would you be using Yahoo! for?
Your language is perfectly acceptable because AOL does suck. There are
better Instant Messaging applications out there like Trillian for instance.
You can use it and talk to AIM, Yahoo Instant Messenger and Windows
Messenger. The AOL internet software is incredibly intrusive and damn near
impossible to get rid of.

Be aware that AOL is not the Internet. Do not confuse portals with the
internet or world wide web (www) as some people, nearly 20 million AOL users
in fact, seem to do.

In Kevin <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

<snip>

If you have cable then you can use AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) for free. You
can use Yahoo Instant Messenger for free though it seems to be a bit buggy
in it's latest build but this is a 64 bit system. If you like the AOL
browser that much then I'd say keep it but that's insane really. Internet
Explorer is really pretty good though doesn't offer tabbed browsing and
breaks some HTML standards but so doesn't AOL and, to be frank, that's what
you've been downloading all the security updates for this entire time. You
might as well take advantage of the free things instead of paying for
services you don't need. That's my thoughts on the subject at any rate.
