XY Scatter Graph using Columns of Y and X coordinates

A

Amanda

Hi,

I'm trying to build an XY Scatter Graph.

I want to have:
* "Opportunity" on the Y axis
* "Capabilities" on the X axis
* I'd like to have each XY coordinate labeled with a
number.

Here is some of the data I am using:

# A Capabilities
1 4.9 3.8
2 4.1 4.8
3 4.1 3.5
4 3.9 3.3

When I use the XY Scatter graph in Excel, I get: using
Columns: both "Opportunity" and "Capabilities" numbers
charted on the Y axis with "Opportunity"
and "Capabilities" each in its own series color. Or,
using Rows, a series for each row, plotting series points
for "Product #", Opportunity

I would appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks!

Are you sure you're not choosing a Line type chart? The two types look
much the same and behave rather differently. A line chart will often
take your intended X and Y values for a single series and create two
series.

Select the data, run the chart wizard again. Try especially hard to
select the Scatter chart icon. On step 2 of the wizard, click on the
series tab to see what Excel's planning to do. At this step you could
delete one series, and assign X values to the other.

And you want a number to label each of the points? Excel does not let
you assign a set of labels to points. You can do it manually one at a
time, which will make you mad. But you could download Rob Bovey's Chart
Labeler (http://appspro.com), or John Walkenbach's Chart Tools
(http://j-walk.com), both free add-ins that let you select a range of
cells that contain labels for the series of points.
