"Service Pack" 2 does require a little preparation on your part.

- You should make a full backup of everything important to you. This
includes (not limited to) your email, contacts, documents, pictures,
spreadsheets, installation install files, serial numbers, etc.
- You should uninstall any software (through Add or Remove Programs control
panel) that you no longer user/never have used.
- You should visit the manufacturer's support web page for each hardware
device you have in your computer (video card, motherboard chipset, network
card, etc) and download/install the latest hardware driver for each
component.
- You should visit the software writer's support page for each piece of
software you have installed and ensure there are no updates you can freely
install for said software.
- You should visit your motherboard manufacturer's web page and guarantee
you do not need a BIOS upgrade in order to install Windows XP SP2 properly.
- You should run a full AntiVirus scan.
- You should use several different AntiSpyware applications and do full
scans/cleanup of spyware/adware.
- You should run a CHKDSK on the system drive (at least.)
- Run a Disk Cleanup to ensure you have one last (and only one) good System
Restore point.
- You should defragment the system drive (at least.)

Once you have done all of that - download the full SP2 installation file and
install from it.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
