XPS Document Writer || different format types

what is the xps document writer? its icon shows up in control
panel>printers>properties (identical iucon as my printer!) but I can't use
it to print: any attempt to print results in a "save as *.xps"

in fact, right clicking the xps document writer icon > properties > "about"
tab states: "USE THIS **PRINTER** TO **SAVE** ANY DOCUMENT AS AN XPS
DOCUMENT"

WHAT CAN THIS POSSIBLY MEAN??!! WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO USE A PRINTER TO
**SAVE**??!!

what is this all about? from what I understand, every ms document is
"converted"(?) into .xps format: a document can be "created" in any format -
..doc, .wps, .rtf -- but it can only be "read" as .xps. what can this
possibly mean??

what are the intended uses for the different formats: .doc, .xps, .rtf,
..wps, "works 4x *.wps"

It's similar to printing to a file or using a PDF "printer" which converts
your document into a PDF file.

I believe XPS is MS's alternative to PDF, though I could be wrong about
that.

You're "spot on," not wrong. XPS docs are MS's equivilant to PDF's.
