XP's Display Properties area question

My PC is running Windows XP SP2.

If I right-click on the desktop, select Properties, that takes me to
XP's Display Properties area. I then click the Settings tab. Here, I see a
large box labeled #1, and a faint, smaller rectangular box labeled #2.
Number #1 is identified as the primary display. Just underneath, I see the
words..."Plug and Play Monitor on RADEON X600 Series." If I click on box
#2, the display wording changes to...."(Default Monitor) on RADEON X600
Series Secondary." Number 2 also gives me different resolution options to
choose from. And the Color quality also changes.

Basically my question is this: what the heck do these two boxes mean??
Box #2 has widescreen resolutions to choose from. Does that mean if I
bought a widescreen monitor I would need to make box #2 my primary display?

Box 2 is telling you that you have a possibily of adding a second
monitor to your video card. Most newer nVidia and ATi (Radeon) video
cards can have two monitors connected to it. You may see one VGA and
one DVI (Digital Video interface???) on the back of the video card.
BTW: Most "newer" wide-screen monitors are starting to come with DVI
connectors only.

Thanks for the info. But why does box #2 have different screen
resolution options than box #1?

Because different monitors have different capabilities.
