XP, year and windows update

I have found out, why somtimes it is imposible to scan
for new updates. (It jumps from 0% to 100% saying no new
updates)
It is becaurse of the date settings on the computer. It
may be the corect day of month but the year has changed
to ie. 2167, leeaving the certificate from Microsoft out
of date, therefore the update is only available through
https://.....

Changing the year back to 2003, corected the problem.
My question is: Why has the year changed in the first
place ??
