XP Xtremely SLOW

i have a new hp pc with a 2.4gig processor and i'm ready
to go back to my old P2 compaq it was faster. XP is slow
to load and takes 4-5 minutes response opening or closing
any apps. Any clue on how i can strip down the registry
to only run the basics? nothing showing in the add remove
programs list. when i check the processes, i'll end one
only to have it start up again....downloaded all pertinent
upgrades & virus stuff. not sure what to do next.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I would download adaware 6.0 it is a spyware removal tool. that would be
your best bet. Spyware has been known to slow down computers a lot. It would
also depend on how much ram you have. if you only have 128 mb. .... get more
xp loves ram. you can also use selective start up to make progams that you
don't want to load at start up to stop. and always defrag.
