XP won't take latest graphics driver

Q

I have a machine running XP with VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP graphics and I
have just installed the very latest driver 6.14.10.357. It installs OK but
when I go into Control Panel->Display->Settings I get this error:

"The currently selected graphics driver can not be used. It was written for
a previous version of Windows, and is no longer compatible with this version
of Windows. The system has been started using the default VGA driver."

What's the story with this? I am not happy with the display quality so I
suspect something is wrong. I have checked that I am downloading the
correct driver and have also tried downloading several times in case the
download was corrupted.

I think I'd go back to the previous driver...

I have tried going back to the previous driver but the problem still
happens. What can I do about it?

In Device Manager...view

enable "show hidden devices"

then delete all instances of graphics drivers...reboot and reinstall
