xp won't shut down

When I click on the shut down icon everything starts normally. I get the blue
screen then it states saving your settings, then it states windows is
shutting down. At this point it freezes and does not shut down. Anyone have
any suggestions, i have xp service pack 2 installed. All other functions are
ok.
