XP won't allow me to rename folders

I've recently set up Win XP on my computer, and have set up my account with
full administrator privileges. However, it seems to make all folders 'Read
only' and when I try to remove this attribute, it seems to accept the
instruction but then when I go back and look at the Properties for the
folder, I find that the Read Only attribute has been re-inserted. The result
is that it will not allow me to rename a folder or performing any editing
action on it.

Would be grateful for some advice as to what I am doing wrong.

Which version of XP? Home or Pro? Have you installed SP1 and all of the
necessary updates? From what did you upgrade? Are you using the NTFS or
FAT/FAT32 file system?

Ignore that green square in the checkbox of the Read Only attribute of the
folder. It only matters if there is an actual checkmark there.

The version is XP Pro and includes SP1. This was a fresh install and not an
upgrade, and the file system being used is NTFS.

The system puts a check mark in the Read Only attribute. When you remove the
check mark, it seems to accept the instruction, but the check mark reappears
when you into Properties again. An error message comes up when you try to
rename the folder.

What folder are your trying to rename? Some folders can't be
renamed.

The 'read only' attribute on a folder is irrelevant. The issue is more
likely with NTFS permissions - follow Greg R's advice.

of course, some folders you can't rename it. but you can try this. open
command prompt, use task manager to kill explorer.exe, switch back to cmd
prompt and issue the rename folder command. restore your desktop with task
manager.

I am having a similar problem. I am trying to roll out
Rational clearcase and CC works by trying to creat views
on every local developer desktop when you check in and
check out files. A folder called VWS get created when CC
tries to create those view files and comes out with
the "Access Denied" error due to lack of permissions.
Microsoft Kbase articles states that Explorer or other
microsoft programs can overlook this Read Only attribute
and create adn delete folders but third party applications
will have problems.

Any thoughts?

What permissions are on the folder? Was this XP a clean build or an
upgrade of an existing Windows OS? Do you see a green box in the Read
Only checkbox or an actual check?
