XP & Win2K machines can't see each other on network

H

Heather

I have an XP laptop and a Win2K desktop.

The laptop is connected to a wireless router - which is
connected to my cable modem.

The desktop is directly connected to the wireless router.

Both are connected to the internet.

I am unable to ping the laptop from the desktop and vice-
versa.

I am also unable to see either machine from either machine
on the "Computers Near Me" page.

All I really want is for the laptop to be able to use the
printer connected to the desktop.

Help?

More info required.
What are the IP configurations of your laptop/desktop. Are
they on the same subnet?
Are you using DHCP or Static IPs?

Both are running DHCP. They are on the same subnet.
They are also in the same workgroup.

Try this.
In advanced IP settings add another IP. Say 192.168.0.50
and on your laptop 192.168.0.51. Same subnet.
Then try pinging 192.168.0.50 from 192.168.0.51.

It is the wireless system. Wireless systems have "privacy features" that are
to prevent anyone with a wireless nic from attaching to your system. These
same features also screw up LAN activity from what I have been seeing in
these groups. I am obviously not a fan of wireless networks and I believe
all the attempts to make them secure have also made them a "wreck" to use.
On the other hand, running without those features make it ridiculously
insecure.

I don't have any specifics to tell you, but this is the area you need to
investigate.

I have the same exact set-up and the same situation,
except I can ping each machine. But, still when I try to
access each machine from the, I am also unable to see
either machine.
