XP will not start

When I boot up Windows XP I get a message that says
winlogon.exe - unable to locate component
this application failed to start because shell32.dll was
not found. Re-installing the application may fix the
problem. Then I get another message "The logon user
interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load. Contact your
system administrator to replace the DLL for restore the
orginal dll.
I then booted from the XP installation disk and tried tp
recover the installation but when it tried to copy the
shell32.dll it failed. So I booted into the recover
console and tried to delete the shell32.dll file. It
failed. I tried to rename the file and got an error that
said "this is not a directory". I even tried to change
the attributes, thinking that the NTFS permissions had
been changed. I got an error that said "file can not be
opened". FYI At the same time this problem started, I
also got an error that said "Norton Antivirus has
experienced a problem and needs to close" I think I've
got a virus but nowhere on the net can I find any
reference to this kind of virual behavior. There is one
posting dated Oct 19 2003 from Yvonne on computing.net
that is the same problem but the recommented fix (recover
install) doesn't work as descriped above. Got any
ideas????? Is there a piece of software I can boot from
that allows me to view and delete NTFS files? Does any
one know of a software fix? short of format c: ??
TIA
Rick
