XP will not run non microsoft programs for more than 20 seconds

In the last few weeks my laptop, a sony vaio grz610, has
started to not run non microsoft programs that i have
been running for the last several months. they will load
and start and run for 15 to 20 seconds then just
disapear. I can't run my virus checker or norton due to
this. I did run Mcafee from IE6 and i have no viruses.
Microsoft programs have no problem i.e. Office xp.

Norton is not a Microsoft product and Microsoft does not currently
market an antivirus program so it appears that more than just
Microsoft products are affected by this problem.

Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run their free online virus
scanner for a second opinion.

Also try starting Windows XP in Safe Mode and see if the behaviour
regarding programs changes in any way. To start Windows XP in Safe
Mode turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key rapidly just as
soon as the first information of any kind shows on the screen. Keep
tapping until the Windows XP Startup Menu appears and choose Safe Mode
from the menu.

Post the results back here and we will proceed to the next step in
trying to resolve this problem.
