I have a home network my XP computers play together well. I introduced a
Vista Pro computer into the network. The XP computers do not show up in the
Network Sharing Center or full Network map of the Vista computer. But one,
lets call it XPA, of them does show up by IP address not by name if I go to
network. If I click on XPA computer in Network I get a window that only
shows an icon that says printers. On the other hand if I type the IP address
of XPA in Window Explorer I get a list of all the shared folders. But if I
select one of them I get [Window Title]
Network Error

[Main Instruction]
Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.50\SharedDocs

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with
your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

[V] See details [Diagnose] [Cancel]

[Expanded Information]
Error code: 0x80070005
Access is denied.
The other XP computer, lets call it XPB, does not show up in Network,
Network Center, of full Network Map. But if I type in its IP address I can
see the shared folders and browse to them.
Both the XP computers see the Vista computers in Workgroup computers. But
both get access denied if they try to use it. I have sharing turned on in
the Vista computer. The XP computers are both at Service Pack 3. If I type
in the XP computers names into the Vista Window Explorer the same things
happen as if I type in the IP addresses. But if I ping the other computers
by name from the command prompt the IP address are in the 207.xx.xx.xx range
instead of the 192.168.1.xx range where they are on the network.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Chas

Have a read of below re Networking them:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall (or LAN allowed, depending on how their
Exceptions are worded in their Firewall)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, and no
identical usernames/passwords, you will be asked for a username and password
when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista
computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home or Small Office Network File and Printer Sharing
Wizard, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to adding a Vista computer
to it(redoing the Wizard seems to work for XP machines!).

In “My Network Placesâ€: “Set up a Home or Small Office Networkâ€
OR under Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard > Allow File
and Printer Sharing.

Thanks, I saw a very similar post (from you?) for another post asking XP
Vista network questions. I already have all the things you list except : I
have password protection ON in the Vista. I want to require a password. The
XPs don't ask for a password when connecting though, they just fail. I tired
turning off Password on the Vista and the XPs still got access denied. I
had rerun the Network wizard on XPA not XPB. Since XPB is still somewhat
functional and XPA is FUBAR (to the Vista machine the XPs are still
compatible) I didn't quite dare run the Wizard on XPB.
I noticed another anomaly. On one copy of Windows explorer in the left
panel XPA showed up as an IP address only. On another copy in the left panel
XPA showed up as an IP address and as a named computer and XPB showed up as a
named computer.
Thanks,
Chas
