XP very slow to load - tried FAQ fix, no luck

My XP Home suddenly started to hang up and I resolved
this with "Go Back." But now it takes about 15 minutes to
load after the "Windows is now loading" splash screen
shows up. I tried the fix recommended in the XP FAQ's:

"Windows XP Takes a Long Time to Start
(823612) - When you start your computer, it takes a long
time for Windows XP to start and it takes a long time for
your desktop items to appear. You do not receive an error
message."

This had no effect. Suggestions anyone?

Thanks. Tried your suggestion #1 and found that
the "Themes" service was the culprit. What next? I can't
seem to find an answer in the Knowledge Base.
