You'll have to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP Pro
and proceed with a "Repair Install".

Can't you just delete the wpa.cpl, then run msoobe.exe?

Are you sure it is not a valid version?
If it is a valid version you can talk to Microsoft fix the problem
because it a windows update failure

Just because wga say's it not a valid version does not mean it is not
a valid version.

And how did you discover this? Was the fact that it was labelled with a
sharpie give you a clue? :-)

How have you found that out? You do know that Validation is flawed and
has found legit Installs of XP as "pirated?"

Personally, I wouldn't believe MS to tell me the correct time, let alone
whether my OS is pirated.

Depends.

I'm going to disagree with you because I had to do this already.
I took my new key and had to enter it into the Update XP KEY.
Then I Stopped the OOBETIMER (instructions where were found somewhere on
the Microsoft site). This causes the Activation dialog to come up allowing
this process to continue.

This whole process took 5- minutes (and it worked)

That's pretty mean spirited, even if it is funny.

However, there is an alternative scenario that happens far too often.

Perhaps this person had his machine built by a friend who makes
computers (I've done this before for a couple of my buddies). The
friend installs XP on the system with THEIR pirated version, then
hands over the hardware but not the CD containing the OS.

Now how does the recipient know the OS was pirated? Common sense may
tell them this (as they didn't have to pay for the OS), but many folks
still operate under the belief they can place Windows on as many
computers as they want.

Hi, I am not sure how to work this, I don't even know how to post this
question but I will try it here... I too have found my Windows XP to be a
priated version. I can no longer get windows updates etc etc... I brough my
computer in months ago for repairs, to a guy that did cheap repairs at an
Internet Cafe and he asked if I would like the Windows XP Office for an extra
$20. I honestly didn't know about these pirated versions... anyway, my
question is, I would like to purchase the Windows Vista Premium, will I need
to validate (and Pay $200.) to Microsoft first, and then purchase the new
Windows Vista for another $200? Also, when changing over will I lose
everything I have on my computer? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

At this time I can't recommend Vista, though the Retail or Upgrade version
of Windows XP may allow a repair to your current installation.

To use an upgrade version of Vista to upgrade an existing installation of
XP, the XP OS has to be installed, activated and genuine. So you have two
options.

1. Make your copy of XP genuine, installed and activated; then purchase an
upgrade version of Vista and do either an in place upgrade or a custom
install.

2. Purchase a full vision of Vista and do a custom install.

You cannot upgrade a non genuine copy of XP to Vista.

As an aside you should not post a new question a a reply to someone else's
thread. Start a new thread. Also there are Vista newsgroups for Vista
questions. One would be microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
