Awhile ago I successfully upgraded my Windows ME operating
system to XP Professional. The original OS came
preinstalled on my computer and I received no Windows ME
disks with the purchase. Now, my hard drive has failed. I
still have the copy of Windows XP Upgrade that I
purchased, but it will not allow me to install it on the
new hard drive because (a. It can't detect an existing
Windows installation and (b. I don't have a Windows CD to
prove I qualify for the "upgrade." Any suggestions?

See if you can borrow the qualifying media from a friend or
relative. Windows 98 or ME cdrom is all you need.

Do you have any Windows 95/98/98Se/Me CD? You can use one to continue
setup, or you can use the restore media to restore the computer to the
original shipped state and then use the XP upgrade.

You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
