Hi,

I want to upgrade my das's computer to XP Home Edition. The system currently has Windows ME installed (OEM Version) and there are no original Windows ME CDs available. Does anybody know if, during the install, Windows XP asks for the original Windows ME CDs? Because if it does, the upgrade will fail as we do not have them.
Also, does anybody know if you can install the XP upgrade over any ME version (OEM and Original)?

Thanks in advance

The retail upgrade version of Windows XP will install just fine over
top of an installed version of Windows Me.

I did just that very many times during the beta testing of Windows XP
(each new beta version was tested as an upgrade install using a copy
of my Windows Me partition as the base).

As with any operating system upgrade things can occasionally go wrong.
So make sure you have any essential data files backed up before
starting the upgrade.

Murphy's Law, or some derivative of it, seems to provide that if you
have good backups you will never need to use them. But the first time
you try to shortcut things and don't backup first - Bloooey.

Good luck

When I did this on my daughters computer I had to provide product reg number. I can not remember if the site for the number was provide with the upgrade or I contacted Microsoft support though.

Did a straight upgrade should be fine. However, if you choose a "New
Installation" you will be required to provide the media from a qualifying
version. Earlier post to create a backup of critical/important data is
excellent advice.

I'm currently trying to update from ME to XP home
edition. My computer can not get pass the preparing
installation stage. Everything appears to be running but
no progress is made in 30 min or more. I've tried
rebooting but I always get stuck at this same place. No
error messages come up and all external hardware has been
unplugged. Am I being impatient or what? I went to dinner
and came back and it's still has not moved. Anyhelp would
be appreciated.

The retail upgrade version of Windows XP will install just fine over

But it won't work if they install from scratch, without a previous
installation of ME.
